Two TIME reporters saw the film—and walked out of it with even more theories and questions than when we walked in. Nope is a transfixing and hugely ambitious movie with a perplexing array of disparate characters and symbols, and by the time the film has ended, the plot has resolved itself neatly.
But in the two packed theaters where we screened the film, theatergoers remained silent and still as the credits rolled, suggesting some sort of confusion, or at least unease, with the whole thing, according to TIME.
Breaking Down the Meaning of Jordan Peele’s Nope (TIME)
Excerpt from TIME: Jordan Peele’s movies beg to be closely scrutinized: they’re full of historical and cultural Easter eggs, double meanings and sociopolitical commentary. His first two films, Get Out and Us, have provoked endless analysis from professors, psychologists, and historians, with Get Out even inspiring a whole class at UCLA. Peele isn’t shy about his conceptual ambition and his penchant for writing Big Themes into genre storytelling: "Humanity is the monster in my films," he told Vanity Fair in 2017. But in the last few months, Peele has signaled that Nope is different in that regard, that his intentions may be more visceral and surface-level. "I wrote it in a time when we were a little bit worried about the future of cinema," Peele said. "So the first thing I knew is I wanted to create a spectacle… the great American UFO story."

The Nope director gently shut down a Twitter user who asked whether Peele could rightly claim that title after favorable reviews for his newest film, as well as Peele's previous hits, 2019's Us and 2017's Get Out.
Jordan Peele is a 'Nope' on suggestions that he's the best horror director (CNN)
Excerpt from CNN: "I know this is a hot take but at what point do we declare Jordan Peele the best horror director of all time?," artist Adam Ellis recently tweeted. "Can you think of another horror director that had 3 great films, let alone 3 in a row? I can't."Peele responded with "Sir, please put the phone down I beg you. Sorry. I love your enthusiasm but, I will just not tolerate any John Carpenter slander!!!," he tweeted.

‘Nope’ First Reactions Are a Resounding ‘Yep,’ Praising Jordan Peele’s ‘Most Ambitious Film’ (Variety)
Excerpt from Variety: Expectations are high for Nope, given Peele’s emergence as one of the most beloved directors over the last five years. His film debut, Get Out, earned four Oscar nominations, including best picture, director for Peele and actor for Daniel Kaluuya. Peele won the Academy Award for original screenplay. The film’s $255 million worldwide gross was matched by Peele’s follow-up, Us, which was praised by critics and sent fans into spirals of theories and explainers. Even though he’s built a brand for himself with only two films, Peele assured that he went into Nope relatively unfettered by audiences’ expectations of him.
